Life has been absolutely wild lately, and I fell way behind on my reviews—and honestly, on my reading too. I finally picked this one back up, and this was actually my second time reading it. The first time I picked it up was back in September 2024, but I knew I really wanted to experience it again once the series was complete, so I could just sink into the whole story without having to wait between books.

If you jump into this one without reading “The Curse that Binds” first, you’re probably not going to feel as connected to Selene/Roxilana and Memnon. So much of what makes their story hit hard is the history you’ve already built with them, all the tension and emotion that carries over. Seeing them in the “modern” world this time around was such a fun shift—watching them struggle through that mix of weariness with each other, lost memories, and all the half-truths and misunderstandings hanging between them, especially when you know they once practically worshipped each other, gives everything this bittersweet, tangled feeling.

Laura Thalassa has this way of pulling you in and wrapping you up in all those tiny emotional details, and she does it again here. She never fails to captivate us with her worldbuilding and her characters, and rereading this just reminded me why I keep coming back to her books.
