Lady of Darkness

When I was looking for my next book to read, I genuinely could not decide. My TBR is absolutely out of control, and every time I thought I’d settled on something, another title would start whispering, “Pick me instead.” So, I finally admitted defeat and sent my TBR list to ChatGPT, along with a little rundown of what I was in the mood for—vibes, tropes, general feelings—and it came back and told me to read the “Lady of Darkness” series.

Now, I’ve read books by Melissa K. Roehrich before and loved them, so the second I saw her name, my expectations shot way up. I went into this book with that delicious mix of excitement and pressure, like, “Okay, this better wreck me in the best way.” But I’ll be completely honest: I was struggling for the first half of the book.

I don’t want to put that fully on the book, because life has been a lot lately. My brain has felt like it has 47 tabs open, all buffering at once. When I did have downtime, I just couldn’t seem to really sink into the story the way I wanted to. I would pick it up, read a bit, and then drift off mentally—not because nothing was happening, but because I just didn’t have the bandwidth to meet the book where it deserved to be read. It just wasn’t holding my attention the way I expected, and that frustrated me.

I even considered DNFing it at one point, which, if you’ve been here for a while, you know is a big deal for me. I have a pretty firm stance on that: I paid for the book, the author put their whole heart and time and energy into it, and unless something is truly, wildly not for me, I feel like it deserves to be finished. I kept thinking about all the hours that went into crafting these characters and this world, and it didn’t feel right to walk away when I knew my head and heart weren’t fully in it yet.

So I pushed through. Slowly at first, a chapter here and there, and then something just…clicked. I am so incredibly glad I stuck with it. At some point, without me even realizing it, the story tightened its grip on me. The emotional beats started landing harder, the tension built in a way that had me leaning forward, and suddenly I was staying up way later than I should have just to get a few more pages in. That shift from “I’m not sure about this” to “I physically cannot put this down” was so satisfying.

There is so much to unpack with this series—emotionally, thematically, character-wise—and I absolutely do not want to accidentally spoil anything. Part of the magic for me was going in expecting one kind of story and slowly realizing it was becoming something deeper and more layered than I’d anticipated. I want you to have that same experience of discovery, of realizing you’re more invested than you meant to be.

So all I’m going to say is this: trust me. Give this book (and the series) a real chance—especially if you find yourself wobbling in those early chapters. Let yourself sit with it, come back to it, and see if it sneaks up on you the way it did on me. If your journey with it ends up anything like mine, you will not be disappointed.

SEPTEMBER 2026 BOOKS

Yep, you guessed it… I only finished four books this month. 😂

September was BUSY. I had several projects I was working on, and my dad is still down, so there just wasn’t a whole lot of extra time to curl up with a book.

But I did stick with one thing that is important to me—I read every single day. ❤️📖

Some days that meant several chapters. Other days? I was lucky to get through ONE. And you know what? I’m counting it! Reading is one of my favorite ways to escape for a little while, so even when life gets busy, I try to make at least a little room for it every day.

Then there’s my current read… 😬

I started Lady of Darkness by Melissa K. Roehrich, and y’all, I am DRAGGING through this first book.

I usually love her books, so I keep waiting for that moment when everything clicks and suddenly I can’t put it down. I really think once I get into it, I’m going to love it—it just hasn’t grabbed me yet.

This is what I get for letting someone else pick my next read. 🤣

And since there are at least FIVE books in the series, apparently I have decided we are in a committed relationship now. 😂 I’m not giving up yet!

Thankfully, the rest of my September reading was GOOD.

✨ I finished the Bewitched series, and those were all solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reads for me.

✨ Then I read The Poison Daughter, and THAT one earned every bit of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

I will absolutely be revisiting The Poison Daughter again. You know a book has gotten me when I’m already thinking about rereading it. ❤️

So, only four books for September—but four books, some great stories, a completed series, a five-star read, and 30 days of making time for something I love.

I’ll take it. 📚❤️

Now here’s hoping October brings a little more reading time… and that Lady of Darkness and I can work through our current relationship problems. 🤣

The Poison Daughter

I’ve had this book for a while, but I was waiting for the audiobook to come out so I could read and listen at the same time. My friends wouldn’t stop talking about it and kept calling it the “book of 2026,” so my expectations were sky-high going in. I’ll admit, it really is a great book—but I’m still not totally ready to crown it the best book of the year just yet. I also feel like I did it a bit of a disservice. I was dealing with some personal stuff while I was reading, so I could only get through a little bit at a time instead of fully sinking into the story the way I wanted to. Because of that, it’s definitely going back on my TBR so I can reread it and give it the full attention it deserves. The story itself is so gripping. Like, can you even imagine never being able to kiss anyone because they’ll die? And then you finally meet the one man who’s immune to your poison—except he just happens to be both your enemy and your future husband. That setup alone had me hooked. There are so many secrets to uncover as you go, and I was genuinely shocked more than once when things were revealed. People keep calling it a “spicy” book, and while the spice is definitely spicy, it’s not the main focus. There are really only a handful of spicy scenes, and you’re so drawn into the plot and the characters that you don’t miss having more of them at all. The plot is absolutely plotting. Overall, I love Henry and Harlow’s story, and I honestly can’t wait to come back to it when I’m in a better headspace and experience it all over again.

Bedeviled

I absolutely loved this series and the way it all wrapped up. I was literally on the edge of my seat, just desperate for Selene and Memnon to finally get their hard-earned happy ending after all those years of pain and chaos. I cried, I screamed, I covered my face with my hands, had to put the book down a few times—it gave me all the feels and then some. Laura Thalassa didn’t just give us what we were hoping for, she somehow delivered even more than I thought possible, and it left me so satisfied and emotional in the best way.

Bespelled

This was a reread for me, but honestly, I remembered maybe half of what happened the first time around. I don’t know if that says more about my chaotic 2024 or about my original reading experience, because it was a total blur. Coming back to it, though, felt like slipping into a story I vaguely knew but could finally appreciate properly.

This book picks up the ongoing story of Selene/Roxilana and Memnon, following them as they find their way back to each other. Selene has finally pieced together and restored her memories, and Memnon has uncovered the truth that’s been kept from him, so there’s this really satisfying sense of emotional payoff as they reconnect. Their relationship feels deeper and more intense this time, because now they’re facing everything with open eyes instead of half-truths and confusion.

On top of the romance, there’s a ton of intrigue woven through the plot. The two of them are constantly battling forced bonds, dodging murder plots, and dealing with demons—both the literal kind and the emotional ones. The stakes feel higher, the danger feels sharper, and it all keeps the story moving at a fast, addictive pace.

I’m absolutely loving where their arc is going, and this installment just made me even more invested in them as a couple. It has that perfect mix of drama, danger, and swoony moments that makes it really hard to put down. I’m honestly so excited to see how everything wraps up in the final book, and I’m really hoping the conclusion lives up to how strong this part of the journey was.

Bewitched

Life has been absolutely wild lately, and I fell way behind on my reviews—and honestly, on my reading too. I finally picked this one back up, and this was actually my second time reading it. The first time I picked it up was back in September 2024, but I knew I really wanted to experience it again once the series was complete, so I could just sink into the whole story without having to wait between books.

If you jump into this one without reading “The Curse that Binds” first, you’re probably not going to feel as connected to Selene/Roxilana and Memnon. So much of what makes their story hit hard is the history you’ve already built with them, all the tension and emotion that carries over. Seeing them in the “modern” world this time around was such a fun shift—watching them struggle through that mix of weariness with each other, lost memories, and all the half-truths and misunderstandings hanging between them, especially when you know they once practically worshipped each other, gives everything this bittersweet, tangled feeling.

Laura Thalassa has this way of pulling you in and wrapping you up in all those tiny emotional details, and she does it again here. She never fails to captivate us with her worldbuilding and her characters, and rereading this just reminded me why I keep coming back to her books.

AUGUST 2026 BOOKS

I didn’t get nearly as much reading in as I wanted to with how absolutely chaotic life has been lately. But even though I only read 9 books (okay, technically 10), most of them were solid 4- and 5-star reads. My book of the month actually goes to one I can’t even officially list yet, because it hasn’t been formally published (the author is currently working on getting it traditionally published). It was one of those pay-by-coin books you see floating around on social media. It’s called The Son of Red Fang and it’s going to be part of a series. Did I know that before I started it? Of course not—because apparently I love starting incomplete series.

This book was so beautifully written. There were a couple of moments where it felt like the author repeated themselves a bit, but honestly, aside from that, it was a 5-star read for me. I’m still thinking about Cole and Demetri. This is not your typical wolf-shifter book. It dives into some really dark subject matter—abuse and torture, sexual assault, mental illness—and it absolutely wrecked me. I was on the verge of tears for almost the entire book. I’ll be reading the entire series once they are published for sure.

August Reads

I didn’t get to read like I normally do, so I only finished 9 books in August, which feels a little wild for me. Every time I tried to sit down with a book, something was pulling my attention away—life was busier than usual, my brain was buzzing with a never-ending to-do list, and honestly, I was spending way too much time scrolling instead of turning pages. My mind just would not settle long enough to really sink into a story.

But now we’re entering the “ber” months, and that always feels like a fresh start to my reading life. The air gets a little crisper, the days get shorter, and suddenly all I want to do is make a cup of something warm, grab a blanket, and disappear into a book for hours. It’s the start of cozy reading season, and I’m so ready for it—more quiet evenings, fewer distractions (fingers crossed), and stacks of books just waiting to be devoured.

On my TBR list so far for September:

  • 📚Bewitched #1: Bewitched – currently reading
  • 📚Bewitched #2: Bespelled
  • 📚Bewitched #3: Bedeviled
  • 📚The Poison Daughter
  • 📚The Stonewater Kingdom #1: The Knight and the Moth
  • 📚The Stonewater Kingdom #2: The Knave and the Moon
  • 📚Dolly All The Time
  • 📚Vows of Vengeance #1: House of Bane and Blood
  • 📚Vows of Vengeance #2: City of Mirth and Malice

What is on your TBR? Any good suggestions?

The Curse that Binds

Laura Thalassa absolutely delivers again with a story packed full of swoony romance, dark intrigue, and just the right amount of heartbreak. This book grabbed me from the first chapter and never really let go. Memnon and Roxilana’s story kicks off when Roxi loses her entire family in a brutal attack, and she’s taken in by a cruel woman in Rome who makes her life a living nightmare. In the middle of all that pain and loneliness, Roxi suddenly realizes she can telepathically communicate with Memnon—yeah, literally hear and speak to him in her mind. What starts off as this strange, secret connection slowly turns into something deeper and so much more intense. Over the years, their bond grows from curiosity and comfort into real love, even though they’re separated and trapped in their own worlds. As Roxi gets older, she starts uncovering who Memnon really is, and at the same time, she’s forced to face the truth about her own power, her past, and what she’s capable of becoming. Of course, nothing comes easy for them. They’re hit with betrayal, impossible choices, and some seriously high stakes that had me nervous for them more than once. Every time it feels like they might finally get a break, something else gets thrown in their way. The tension between them—both emotional and romantic—keeps building, and you’re constantly wondering how they’ll survive all of it together. And that ending? You will not see it coming. It’s dramatic, a little bit ruthless, and it sets up so much for what’s next. I’m already dying to pick up the next book and see how all these threads and characters are going to tie together across the series.

Just for the Plot

This book was exactly what I didn’t even know I was craving. It’s the kind of rom-com that hits every single spot—funny, swoony, and just a little bit addictive. The banter between Bennett, OC, Graydon, and Nolan is absolutely hilarious; I was grinning like an idiot and full-on laughing out loud more than once. And the scenes between Bower and Bennett? Totally, unapologetically hot in the best possible way. It felt like the perfect little escape from real life, the kind of story you slip into and don’t want to climb back out of. Honestly, this was everything I was hoping for and more—Meghan Quinn just does not miss.
