COMMON GOAL

I had to keep going with the series because, wow, I’m totally hooked now! The storytelling is just brilliantly done. This part really shines a light on the awesome bond between Kyle and Eric, who you might remember from the first book. Eric, fresh out of a divorce and figuring out his sexuality, can’t help but feel attracted to Kyle, a super charming younger grad student and bartender at a local gay bar. Their story kicks off with some cute moments, as Kyle steps in to help Eric tackle the ups and downs of being bisexual, offering him emotional support and a fun friendship. As they hang out more, things start heating up between them, and their feelings turn into something way deeper than they expected. Eric can’t help but think about their age gap, but he’s also feeling hopeful about their connection while gearing up for an action-packed last season as a hockey player, pumped about what’s to come. Meanwhile, Kyle’s all about exploring his crush on older guys, really leaning into the strong feelings he has for Eric. As they get closer, the adventure pushes them to face their insecurities and what society thinks; the story blossoms into a hopeful take on love and identity, making them rethink their ideas about relationships, and ultimately leading to discovering not just each other’s beauty, but also some pretty deep truths about themselves against the vibrant backdrop of desire and self-discovery. Rachel Reid has done it again!

TOUGH GUY

Tough Guy doesn’t hit the same notes for me as Heated Rivalry, mainly due to its lighter tone and different character dynamics. The main characters are openly gay men, which is a much-needed change, and while Ryan is a hockey player, he effortlessly sidesteps the inner turmoil that previous characters had to navigate. He proudly embraces his identity, free from the weight of judgment, and he and Fabian share a relationship that flourishes without those typical struggles. This makes the story lean more toward a rom-com, brimming with charming moments and playful banter rather than heavy dramatic conflicts. There’s still some tension, of course, but you’ll have to read it to discover what that entails. If you’re eager to explore MM books, this one is a perfect entry point, providing a warm and inviting portrayal of love and acceptance. The intimate scenes may be infrequent and not overly detailed, yet they highlight the authentic connection between the characters. Ultimately, it’s a fantastic read that beautifully captures the joys of love while steering clear of unnecessary angst. Rachel Reid truly knows how to craft a compelling narrative that leaves you feeling satisfied long after you’ve turned the last page!

HEATED RIVALRY

I absolutely loved this story. I watched the series and read the book simultaneously, which undoubtedly fueled my obsession and kept me fully engaged with the characters and plot. First off, the series adaptation is about 98% true to the book, capturing the essence of the original narrative with only a few changes in dialogue that are negligible and do not detract from the overall experience. If you’re planning to watch the show, you must read Book 1, Game Changer, first; it intricately weaves Scott and Kip’s storyline into the series, creating a rich backdrop that enhances the viewing experience. The careful craftsmanship is evident, and the connections established in the book provide additional depth to the characters’ motivations on screen. That said, my review will focus on both the book and the series since they are so intertwined in my mind, each complementing the other beautifully. Did I mention how much I loved it? While it wasn’t a 5-star read for me, I would have rated it 4.5 stars if half stars were possible, as it stands out among other novels in the genre. If you expect this book to be a mere MM spicy novel, you’re in for a surprise. Yes, there are some spicy scenes that are tastefully crafted, but the story offers so much more, delving into themes of love, identity, and the struggle for acceptance. It’s not really about hockey either; at its core, it tells the tale of two people who, against all odds, find each other and embark on a decade-long battle for their love—a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Shane is driven and structured, with everything needing to be done a certain way; his meticulous nature speaks volumes about his character and the pressures he faces. He is perpetually preoccupied with perception, commitment, and duty, often to the point of self-sacrifice. In contrast, Ilya hails from Russia, where his every move seems to be controlled, and a relationship with a man is against the law, adding layers of complexity and danger to his situation. They initially use each other as a distraction from their respective challenges, yet as their bond deepens, neither can deny the profound and deep feelings they develop. With one another, they can truly be themselves, revealing vulnerabilities they might never show to the outside world; yet if anyone discovers their relationship, it could jeopardize their careers and lives in unimaginable ways. I have never rooted for two people to be together quite like I did with Shane and Ilya, as their journey is fraught with heartache but also hope. This book is masterfully written, capturing the intricacies of human emotions and relationships, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a story that resonates on multiple levels. I can’t wait to read The Long Game, but will wait till season 2 drops.

This book, this entire series, completely captivated me. I can confidently say that I’ll always carry its essence with me. The emotional depth of the characters and the intricacies of their relationships left a lasting impression that fills me with joy when I think back on those pivotal moments. Not in a negative way, but rather a delightful curiosity sparks within me, urging me to explore their journeys further. I can’t help but want to leap five years into the future just to check in. IRON & EMBER

This was a re-read for me, and I was thoroughly captivated once again, just as I was the first time! My excitement soared as I prepared to dive into the other two books in the series, which led me to revisit the first book, and I can confidently assert that I was not disappointed at all. Wren and Tori’s story is truly remarkable, intricately woven into a tapestry of emotion that seizes your soul and holds it firmly. I had completely forgotten how much I valued every character in Thezmarr, from Kip and Cal to Wilder and Thea. The profound yearning between the characters leaps off the page, amplifying the emotional turmoil they face. Every twist and turn in the plot keeps you fully engaged, leaving you eager for more. It is a remarkable triumph of storytelling, and once more, I find myself deeply invested in their journey, my heart expanding with every word.

GAME CHANGER

I craved an enthralling escape after reading The Alchemist, so I eagerly dove into Game Changer by Rachel Reid. The excitement surrounding the Heated Rivals series on HBO Max inspired me to immerse myself in the book before the adaptation premiered. You know how I am—when a series calls my name, I joyfully start right from the beginning! At the heart of this captivating tale lies the beautiful dance of relationships, sprinkled with insecurities, deep-seated secrets, and the transformative power of love. Scott embarked on a heartfelt journey of self-discovery, recognizing that true happiness and acceptance blossomed from honesty with himself and those he cares about. He learned that being a role model could coexist with staying true to himself and nurturing his connections. Meanwhile, Kip explored his identity, discovering that his self-worth wasn’t tied to his profession, or lack thereof. He realized that loving someone could flourish without sacrificing friends and family or weaving falsehoods. This narrative goes beyond mere romance; it delves into the profound connections that thrive outside a relationship between two men. This is definitely a delightful read, and I think I will pace myself through the series, enjoying a book every now and then. Each book can stand alone, making it a wonderful journey!

ALCHEMIST

I had to rush back and update my review and rating because I made the impulsive choice to rate this masterpiece too quickly without letting it sink in. Last night, I was consumed by thoughts of the Alchemist, which burrowed deep into my mind. I scrutinized every aspect of it, and it unmistakably deserves a solid 5-Star rating, if not more! My friends had raved about it being the best book of 2025, and now I finally grasp what they meant. This book stirred a whirlwind of emotions within me and made me reflect on so many things. SenLinYu is nothing short of a genius. She gifted her readers with the entire experience in one massive volume. Yes, it spans nearly 1100 pages, but that’s far superior to being fragmented across three volumes, leaving us in suspense for the next installment. Think of each section as a unique book in a series if that helps. Sure, part 1 might feel a bit disorienting and flood you with questions, introducing you to the Helena and Kaine Ferron at their most vulnerable, and you might initially find Ferron despicable. But as part 1 unfolds, Helena begins to recall her memories, and in part 2, we delve back into the past, reconnecting with Helena and eventually Kaine, unveiling their backstories. It’s at this point that you truly begin to understand each character and their hurdles. Part 3 thrusts you back into the present, allowing you to see everything with fresh perspectives. The author could have opted for a linear chronology, but I believe such an approach wouldn’t have done justice to the profound impact this narrative delivers. I know I’ll carry this book with me for years to come.

Original Review: Wow! What a powerful way to kick off the year! I found myself grappling with the decision of whether to give this a 4 or a breathtaking 5-star rating, but in the end, I leaned towards a 4-star because I was SO close to returning it to my TBR pile. The beginning had me feeling lost and bewildered. I was torn between pushing forward or setting it aside for another time. Ultimately, I pressed on for two compelling reasons: first, my bookish friends had faced similar struggles and urged me to persevere, assuring me it would blossom in Part 2. Secondly, I was already too captivated, despite the confusion swirling around me. I knew that if I set it down, it would gnaw at me, leaving me anxious about what unfolded next. And oh, how thrilled I am that I did! The momentum picked up for me just before part 2, though that was nearly 300 pages in! With a hefty tome exceeding 1,000 pages, be prepared for an epic journey. When it strikes, it strikes hard! Leading up to my reading experience, everyone flagged its dark themes, and while it indeed had its shadowy moments, at its core, it’s a profound love story. Both Helena and Kaine are willing to sacrifice everything for each other’s safety—two souls standing at opposite ends of existence; one who gives life and one who takes it, yet their hearts interweave with such depth. This was a genuine work of art that challenges you to ponder: what would you be willing to overlook for true love? Would you forgive all their past transgressions if it meant saving their soul?

NOT SAFE FOR WORK

Such a great book to end the year with. I absolutely loved the complex relationship between Rafe and Trishara, which is not only deeply engaging but also beautifully developed throughout the narrative. The perfect mixture of enemies to lovers and slow burn creates a captivating dynamic that had me eagerly turning the pages. Their journey towards understanding and love is filled with tension and heartfelt moments, leading to a truly happy ending that leaves a lasting impression. Nisha J. Tuli never disappoints with her storytelling prowess. If you have read any of her other books, like the Artefacts of Ouranos series, then you know just how talented she is; her ability to weave intricate plots with relatable characters is truly admirable. And if you haven’t experienced her work yet, why not dive in and see what you’re missing? Back to Not Safe for Work, though—the story is so well written, striking a perfect balance between humor, romance, and drama. It gives you just enough spice without distracting from the overall narrative, making every moment feel essential to the character’s growth and the unfolding plot. In a world where many stories fall flat, this one stands out as a remarkable piece of literature that you’ll want to recommend to everyone you know.

HOME SWEET HOLIDAYS

Home Sweet Holidays was an intriguing collection of holiday novellas available on Amazon, each penned by a different author, tantalizing readers with stories of romance igniting amid the festive chaos. Yet, I couldn’t shake the frustration that came with their brevity; each story barely scratched the surface, offering little in the way of character depth or plot intricacy. Those fleeting moments of passion left me tantalized and desperate for more—my appetite for a richer narrative was left unsatisfied, igniting a fierce craving for something deeper.
