I’ve had this book for a while, but I was waiting for the audiobook to come out so I could read and listen at the same time. My friends wouldn’t stop talking about it and kept calling it the “book of 2026,” so my expectations were sky-high going in. I’ll admit, it really is a great book—but I’m still not totally ready to crown it the best book of the year just yet. I also feel like I did it a bit of a disservice. I was dealing with some personal stuff while I was reading, so I could only get through a little bit at a time instead of fully sinking into the story the way I wanted to. Because of that, it’s definitely going back on my TBR so I can reread it and give it the full attention it deserves. The story itself is so gripping. Like, can you even imagine never being able to kiss anyone because they’ll die? And then you finally meet the one man who’s immune to your poison—except he just happens to be both your enemy and your future husband. That setup alone had me hooked. There are so many secrets to uncover as you go, and I was genuinely shocked more than once when things were revealed. People keep calling it a “spicy” book, and while the spice is definitely spicy, it’s not the main focus. There are really only a handful of spicy scenes, and you’re so drawn into the plot and the characters that you don’t miss having more of them at all. The plot is absolutely plotting. Overall, I love Henry and Harlow’s story, and I honestly can’t wait to come back to it when I’m in a better headspace and experience it all over again.
