Tough Guy doesn’t hit the same notes for me as Heated Rivalry, mainly due to its lighter tone and different character dynamics. The main characters are openly gay men, which is a much-needed change, and while Ryan is a hockey player, he effortlessly sidesteps the inner turmoil that previous characters had to navigate. He proudly embraces his identity, free from the weight of judgment, and he and Fabian share a relationship that flourishes without those typical struggles. This makes the story lean more toward a rom-com, brimming with charming moments and playful banter rather than heavy dramatic conflicts. There’s still some tension, of course, but you’ll have to read it to discover what that entails. If you’re eager to explore MM books, this one is a perfect entry point, providing a warm and inviting portrayal of love and acceptance. The intimate scenes may be infrequent and not overly detailed, yet they highlight the authentic connection between the characters. Ultimately, it’s a fantastic read that beautifully captures the joys of love while steering clear of unnecessary angst. Rachel Reid truly knows how to craft a compelling narrative that leaves you feeling satisfied long after you’ve turned the last page!
