I absolutely loved this story. I watched the series and read the book simultaneously, which undoubtedly fueled my obsession and kept me fully engaged with the characters and plot. First off, the series adaptation is about 98% true to the book, capturing the essence of the original narrative with only a few changes in dialogue that are negligible and do not detract from the overall experience. If you’re planning to watch the show, you must read Book 1, Game Changer, first; it intricately weaves Scott and Kip’s storyline into the series, creating a rich backdrop that enhances the viewing experience. The careful craftsmanship is evident, and the connections established in the book provide additional depth to the characters’ motivations on screen. That said, my review will focus on both the book and the series since they are so intertwined in my mind, each complementing the other beautifully. Did I mention how much I loved it? While it wasn’t a 5-star read for me, I would have rated it 4.5 stars if half stars were possible, as it stands out among other novels in the genre. If you expect this book to be a mere MM spicy novel, you’re in for a surprise. Yes, there are some spicy scenes that are tastefully crafted, but the story offers so much more, delving into themes of love, identity, and the struggle for acceptance. It’s not really about hockey either; at its core, it tells the tale of two people who, against all odds, find each other and embark on a decade-long battle for their love—a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Shane is driven and structured, with everything needing to be done a certain way; his meticulous nature speaks volumes about his character and the pressures he faces. He is perpetually preoccupied with perception, commitment, and duty, often to the point of self-sacrifice. In contrast, Ilya hails from Russia, where his every move seems to be controlled, and a relationship with a man is against the law, adding layers of complexity and danger to his situation. They initially use each other as a distraction from their respective challenges, yet as their bond deepens, neither can deny the profound and deep feelings they develop. With one another, they can truly be themselves, revealing vulnerabilities they might never show to the outside world; yet if anyone discovers their relationship, it could jeopardize their careers and lives in unimaginable ways. I have never rooted for two people to be together quite like I did with Shane and Ilya, as their journey is fraught with heartache but also hope. This book is masterfully written, capturing the intricacies of human emotions and relationships, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a story that resonates on multiple levels. I can’t wait to read The Long Game, but will wait till season 2 drops.
